Milestones & Recognition
Welcoming our 100,000th Ocean Steward in 2018 is an achievement we wish to celebrate with you, our supporters. From serving our first student in 1996, whose class participated thanks to the vision of OSO founder Jack O'Neill, to our successes over two decades later, we owe it all to you. Here are some of the highlights.
1983 - Jack & Tim O'Neill purchase Team O'Neill catamaran in Sand City.
1992 - Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary designated.
1996 - First two O'Neill Sea Odyssey classes occur in December.
1999 - Adam Webster Memorial Fund established for special needs youth.
2000 - Jack O'Neill & Harry Hind donate O'Neill Building to OSO.
2003 - Curriculum handbook published and widely distributed.
2005 - Donor-funded remodel of OSO education center completed.
2006 - US Senator Barbara Boxer’s Conservation Champion Award.
- OSO begins providing transportation scholarships for low-income schools.
- Installation of new rooftop weather station.
2008 - Solar system installed for OSO and Surfrider Foundation.
2012 - Curriculum aligned to Ocean Literacy Principles and distributed throughout California.
2013 - Silicon Valley Business Journal’s Community Impact Award.
- Long-term study of program impact completed.
2015 - Virtual program created and offered to classrooms unable to travel to Santa Cruz.
2016 - Pepper College Readiness Network partner to provide curriculum nation-wide.
2017 - Passing of OSO Founder, Jack O'Neill.
